Emerging Designer - Lalita Lu for Me & Oli

What inspired you to want to become a designer?

A love of seeing something wonderful in the world and documenting, reinterpreting and communicating that through my work.

How long have you been designing?

Since I was a child! Then: Cards, drawings & coin pouches for friends and family. Now: Clothes, textiles and all things illustrated for everyone!

When creating a new collection where do you source your inspiration?

I get inspiration from whatever fascinates me at a particular point in time. This can come from books, films, music, travel, my general everyday & come in the form of a story or an idea that then takes form to drive the design of the entire collection. My obsession for the past few years have been Australian flora & fauna… & I don't think I will rest properly until I create a print with these features and creatures all over it.

If you could work with any one other designer who would it be and why?

Hussein Chalayan because of his incredible artistry and wild experimentation in both form and surface, and his constant exploration of that fine line between art and functional design.

Can you define what your label represents for those out there who are unaware of it?

Me & Oli specialises in creating artworks for fashion textile prints, bringing birds, beards, flora & fauna to life across beautiful fabrics and making these into clothing that cry easy-to-wear. Our prints tell a tale and we are of the philosophy 'why limit artworks to your wall when you can also wear them!'
We love all things whimsical and playful and so at our online shop we have created a ‘paper doll’ style environment where people can choose a Me & Oli artwork, match it to a dress or top shape from our library, and we make their favourite combination to order!
Bringing an old fashioned tailoring service to a modern online environment.

What are your own style mantras?

Simple with a big twist!

Favorite places to shop?

South end of King St, Newtown! There's vintage everything there and this whole section of the street is still filled with so much character… at an affordable price!

What do you think is an absolute must have, staple piece this season?

Love hats… and the 1920’s so a cloche hat… or a bob!

Can you give our Shoppingbirds one piece of advice when it comes to fashion?

If you love something that you know is a passing trend, make it your own by combining with a favourite, well worn piece from your wardrobe…or shoe rack!

Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?

I am OBSESSED with films and, despite it being a little out of place, often do film reviews on the Me & Oli blog at www.meandoli.com/blog

Emerging Designer: Jessica Ryan

Jessica Ryan comes from a family of fashion designers, and she knew from a young age that she too wanted to join the ranks.

She has done just that with her recent launch of her own self-named swimsuit label that is making waves.

A year ago, Jessica debuted her first collection of swimwear online through her personal website, jessicaryanswimwear.com. Jessica Ryan’s swimsuits are truly unique because she designs many of her own prints. All prints are on special and imported, high-quality Italian Lycra fabric. The fabric is specially designed to hold colour despite the elements, and washes up well.

Though the fabric may be from overseas, all other aspects of the manufacturing happen in Melbourne. Jessica is proud of the fact that her company is locally-based saying, ‘I love that everything is done right here, in Australia.’

Jessica’s first swimwear collection featured two-pieces that were sophisticated, with clean lines and feminine prints. In all her work, Jessica strives to create pieces that are confident and wearable without being too flashy. She says, ‘I want to convey a streetwear vibe, with a touch of girliness.’

Customers can expect to pay between $80-125 for a Jessica Ryan swimsuit, and are able to buy them at her online store, jessicaryanswimwear.com.

One day, Jessica Ryan hopes to have her own shop for her label. We at Shoppingbird wish her the best of luck encourage shoppingbirds to check out her collection!
